Objective:

Reduce piece part cost and lead time.

Situation:

The customer’s design for the part consisted of four separate components and required multiple operations, including sawing, laser cutting, welding and machining.

Solution:

Without sacrificing quality or functionality, D&S personnel redesigned the part so that it could be made from a single piece of bar stock and two pins. This reduced the number of machining and welding operations from 7 to 3.

Bottom Line:

The price per part was reduced by 54%, which resulted in an annual savings to the customer of more than $30,000. The lead time for the part was cut from 13 days to 3 days.
