Produce a functional part without excessive inspection costs and ensure that machining chips are thoroughly removed to prevent pump damage.

The customer was faced with a tight tolerance part requiring time consuming and costly inspection because of many critical design characteristics. Part cleanliness was essential due to a lack of filters between the impeller and the oil storage reservoir. Any contaminants could cause catastrophic damage to the pump unit.

D&S worked with the customer to create functional gaging that was calibrated annually to ensure the finished product would meet all requirements. This facilitated 100% inspection of the critical characteristics in a cost-effective manner. In addition, a washing process was implemented to flood the pockets that were trapping machining chips.

The customer now receives a functional part that consistently meets dimensional requirements and the potential for machining chips flowing into the oil reservoir was eliminated.
